REPORTED SPEECH: REPORTED STATEMENTS





When we want to say what someone has said we don’t normally use the exact words:



Example: What did your mother say?



She said I had to be at home by ten that night



What were her actual words?
 You have to be home by ten tonight

REPORTED COMMANDS

REPORTED SUGGESTIONS




IN REPORTED STATEMENTS YOU WILL HAVE TO

Change pronouns

change other words  eg. today, that day; yesterday,the day before…..

change the verb. always moving it to the past:

present simple to past simple 
present continuous to past continuous

past simple, present perfect or past perfect to past perfect.

past continuous, present perfect continuous or past perfect continuous to past perfect continuous

Will to would, can to could…..must to had to

REPORTED SPEECH: COMMANDS

 A COMAND IS AN ORDER In english we give orders using the base form of the verb , and it is the only time we don't use a subject. Teachers and parents are used to giving orders. The government too. Stop complaining. Don't bounce. Tidy your room. Stay at home You need to introduce a verb that indicates the command immediately followed by  to + infinitive   if negative  not +to +infinitive My mom told me to stop complaining She told me not to bounce
